FDA Strengthens Safeguards for Consumers of Beef

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final regulation barring certain cattle materials from all animal feed, including pet food. The final rule further protects animals and consumers against bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as "mad cow disease"). This regulation finalizes a proposed rule that the FDA issued for public comment in October 2005.
Smith-Lever Special Needs Funding

Requests for application are now available for CSREES' Special Needs Program. Those eligible to apply are 1862 Land Grant Institutions. This round of funding is intended "to support innovative, education-based approaches to addressing emergency preparedness and specific responses related to natural and man-made disasters.
EDEN Participates in Groundbreaking Web site Providing a New Resource for Consumers in Disaster Education

Many land-grant institutions have partnered in a groundbreaking new Web site, eXtension.org, launched during the National Ag Outlook Forum February 21 and 22.  EDEN led one of the Pioneer Communities of Practice with work teams that have focused on Agrosecurity and Flooding.  EDEN resources in these topic areas are now available to the general public through eXtension.

The Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) links Extension educators from across the U.S. and various disciplines, enabling them to use and share resources to reduce the impact of disasters.

The EDEN website receives support from the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture under CSREES/USDA Agreements No. 2005-37620-15609 and 2004-37620-14644. Earlier support was provided under SPN 98-ESNP-1-0317 and CSREES/USDA Agreement No 2002-30001-1210.
