Officials in both Pennsylvania and Illinois have reported the earliest findings of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes and birds (PA only). Typically the first detections of the virus have been in early to mid-June. Officials believe the warmer winter weather is playing a role in this early appearance of the virus. Keep in mind birds are the reservoir hosts of the virus and play a key role in the transmission cycle. Community Control programs have started in many communities throughout the United States, however it is up to individuals to take personal responsibility for mosquito control at home and when participating in outdoor activities. For more information on the mosquitoes in your area that are carriers of the virus and tips for at home control see the
EDEN West Nile Virus page.
