Penn State uses a variety of different strategies when addressing the Pennsylvania audience. Their message of preparedness remains consistent throughout their outreach efforts. Penn State uses a more year-round approach as opposed to focusing on September as National Preparedness Month alone. They still utilize many of the same resources that other organizations use as well. They focus mainly on in-service training programs and non-Extension organizations that could utilize their unique communication tools and materials.
These training sessions work internally with Extension educators, training them to incorporate the NPM and EDEN materials into their program areas. Using the "train-the-trainer" approach, educators get a better understanding of available resources that can be used in their presentation and customized to suit their needs in their communities.
Example: A Food Science/Preservation workshop was offered periodically throughout the year and included food safety tips and other resources highlighted by NPM. Handouts or Web resources are made available and assistance in presenting information is also offered.
Penn State has also focused its efforts on organizations outside of the traditional Extension area. Focusing on these groups diversifies the audience and allows for a larger number of individuals to be reached. Information can be catered to each of the groups addressed. Ideas for involvement include:
Three-Panel Display Board
Penn State has developed a tri-panel upright display that is travel-friendly and loaded with information that would benefit any community group or organization. The panels feature essentials about Penn State, EDEN, and other information relevant to NPM. This display is very versatile in respect to audience types and ability to effectively communicate the message of preparedness.
Interactive Go Kit
Penn State also utilizes a Go Kit as a visual aid in their various communication events. A packed bag filled with the supplies needed to assist in a disaster situation is used to show each of the items to the consumer. The ingredients of the bag, a communication plan, contact information, and the location of each of the state Extension offices is also provided in the bag. This is a great resource for any audience, but particularly families.
